FutureU Service Overview

The need to be informed is met by:
 Internal Communication
Nothing motivates like a compelling message well conveyed.

W

ith many employees, managers and executives contemplating a career change or early retirement, organizations today have more at stake than ever before in communicating with their own people. The cost of recruiting and training a single new hire can be as much as $50,000, especially if you factor in lost productivity. When a personnel shortage forces the closure of a work unit, the bottom line suffers. High turnover also de-stabilizes the corporate culture. Effective internal communication plays a valuable role in retention and professional development. As the work force ages and the economy continues to change, your organization's future will depend increasingly on the quality and timing of the messages you convey to your own team.

For more than 25 years, the founders of FutureU have been helping organizations communicate with their employees and other stakeholders. By conveying vital messages with clarity, strength and appeal, these efforts have instilled trust, promoted buy-in, enhanced training, and inspired loyalty,

Compelling messages every employee, manager, & executive needs to hear:

  • Your continuing participation in our organization is vital. We need you.
  • We are fully committed to earning and strengthening your loyalty.
  • Toward that end, we want you to know:
  • Your opinion counts.
  • What you want matters.
  • You deserve to feel good about your work.
  • Lifelong learning is a "win/win" for you and the organization.
  • Leadership is a skill. If you want to lead, we'll help you prepare.
  • Good teamwork works. It too is a skill you can learn.
  • With new technology, learning and teamwork need not add to your workload.
  • We are committed to making your work and your life easier and more rewarding.

How FutureU can enhance your communication.

Branding. Success often boils down to a handful of words and images that convey your message with clarity and simplicity. Do you know what business you're really in? Can you tell the whole story in an elevator ride? Is it the real story, the best version of your best and most fundamental message? The FutureU team includes branding experts who have helped hundreds of organizations find the answers that were right for them.

Communications Audit. Effective communication is an art and a craft. The communication professionals at FutureU have the experience to make cogent recommendations for improvement in the language, appearance, timing, and distribution of your existing messages. Often a small change can make a big difference.

Workplace Research. Effective communication starts and ends with knowing your audience. One major medical center began improving internal communication by first engaging FutureU to assess existing methods and attitudes and recommend changes. The process had the added benefit of giving people a safe context in which to air opinions and concerns, a key strategy for retention. Planners drew on the study's findings and recommendations to design a new communication plan. For best results, make needs assessments, opinion surveys and follow-up evaluations an integral part of your communication strategy. See the FutureU brochure on Workplace Research for a full explanation of these services and their value to your organization.

"De-Jargonization." So heavily do most organizational messages rely on administrative jargon that two-thirds of employees in a recent well-publicized survey said they don’t even believe their employer’s communications. Fewer than half said they understood their organization’s mission. Such reactions cannot be good for morale or loyalty. Let FutureU help you reinterpret your existing messages in plain English that conveys the sincerity as well as the professionalism you intend.

Collateral Materials.  FutureU’s portfolio includes project proposals, program brochures, annual reports, newsletters, press releases, articles, executive reports and letters, implementation plans, speeches, PowerPoint presentations, traditional slide shows and videos. FutureU will work closely with you to plan, craft and produce materials that attract notice and command respect within your own organization.

Organizational History. If you have not yet turned the history of your organization into a compelling story, and shared it with every employee, manager and other stakeholder, you are missing a unique opportunity to instill pride, strengthen organizational memory, and provide the kind of perspective that inspires people to "stay the distance" in tough times. Ask to see what FutureU has done to bring history alive at other organizations.

White Papers. Complex topics deserve in-depth exploration. A series of white papers on the health-care crisis, produced for a major medical center by FutureU CEO Gail Terry Grimes, has played a key role in educating and motivating stakeholders. Educate your own team about the historical perspective, key issues, proposals and plans surrounding any topic of serious concern to your organization.

The Once-A-Day.  If training, reinforcement, and shared governance take only a few minutes a day, busy people are more likely to fit them in. FutureU can build you a program of daily messages and interactive communications on any topic.

Spot Consulting. An affordable approach to effective communication on a tight budget is to ask for a quick FutureU review of your most important documents before they are distributed.

Planning and Strategic Thinking. Communication is too important to leave to chance. A well-designed plan starts with a shared vision, achievable goals and action steps. FutureU provides the independent facilitation that allows every internal stakeholder group to participate fully. Your organization may be ready for a Future Search,™ the facilitated stakeholder retreat format now used by organizations around the world. FutureU has a number of trained Future Search facilitators on its team.

Virtual Communication. Computer-based learning and collaboration are valuable tools for the modern organization, yet too often they are rolled out in a haphazard manner that leads to slow adoption and user dissatisfaction. FutureU has helped the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum, the NASA Astrobiology Institute, and numerous colleges and universities shorten their launch time, bypass costly learning curves, generate enthusiasm, improve results and generally make the most of their investment in information technology. See the FutureU brochure on Information Technology for a full description of these services and their value to your organization's internal communication.

Training in Basic Business English and Professional Writing. Employees with good writing skills produce written memos and reports that reinforce a professional image. Long term, the result for the employee is greater confidence, greater respect from decision makers, and better preparation for professional advancement. FutureU offers workshops and online tutorials to help employees brush up on their English grammar and usage, refine their personal style, and master the basics of business communication. English as a second language also available. Various formats.

Training in Improvisation for Managers and Teams. Whenever the unexpected happens, as it often does in today's rapidly changing business climate, the ability to improvise is as much about good interpersonal communication as it is about individual flexibility. FutureU is proud to offer Stanford University Drama Professor Patricia Ryan Madson’s workshops in improvisation for working professionals. Founder of the Stanford Creativity Initiative, Professor Madson has delivered this training for Hewlett Packard, Price Waterhouse, and others. By engaging in exercises that encourage spontaneity and fresh thinking, participants learn to solve problems "on their feet."  Physical activities accommodate all levels of ability. Various formats.

Other Training. Organizations look to FutureU for training in business literacy, leadership development, team-building, and personal growth. See the FutureU catalog, of Continuous Learning Opportunities, for a list of current offerings, and, for details, see the FutureU website at www.futureu.com.

Vendor Research. The FutureU team has a unique combination of experience in the new media and corporate leadership training. We stay abreast of developments in both fields and serve as an impartial intermediary to help organizations choose among the many vendors of information technology, training, content, and assessment.
