What is Blended Training?

Blended training is any organized learning activity that combines technology-mediated learning with traditional classroom delivery. The technology ranges from expensive room-based videoconferencing to more modest solutions such as ordinary desktop Internet browsing, voice mail and conference calls.

Examples of blended training include workshops, courses or even entire programs that use:

  • e-mail or online forums to continue the discussion outside of the classroom
  • alternating face-to-face meetings and conference calls
  • live television broadcasts to multiple sites
  • email reminders and reinforcers to follow up on the content of a training program
  • Any other combination of face-to-face learning and technology-mediated learning.

Why Use Blended Training?

  • Lower cost than 100% face-to-face training
  • Greater convenience and flexibility for busy adult learners
  • Broader application to different learning styles and capabilities.

How to Get Started

Before launching any blended learning activity, start by assessing the technological readiness and needs of the learning population to determine what hardware and software is already in place and what should be added.

In the long run, this will save money, It will also improve buy-in around the inevitable changes that come with blended training.

Second, inventory your existing technologies. You may be able to deliver content without going beyond what you already have, , such as voice mail, conference calling, e-mail, Internet browsing, or video conferencing in the board room or training room.. Third, evaluate current materials and delivery methods with an eye toward adding technology-mediated components. Not every program will need to be modified, but for certain kinds of content and certain needs, technology will definitely improve the learning outcomes.

Then, study the new technologies designed especially for learning.
