Overcoming Stage Fright in Everyday Life by Joyce Ashley (New York: Clarkson Potter, 1996). "Stage fright," or what the professionals call "performance anxiety," is an almost universal affliction, sometimes ranked as even worse than the fear of death. Jungian analyst and former actress Joyce Ashley uses a combination of techniques borrowed from the fields of acting and psychoanalysis to help you identify and confront the childhood sources of your stage fright. Ashley then illustrates an eight-step program to overcoming stage fright with two real-world case studies. In a final section she shows you how to follow her program on your own at home.

Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ by Daniel Goleman (New York: Bantam, 1995). Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our "two minds"--the rational and the emotional--and how they together shape our destiny. Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence, and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being. What emerges is an entirely new way to talk about being smart. The best news is that "emotional literacy" is not fixed early in life. Every parent, every teacher, every business leader, and everyone interested in a more civil society, has a stake in this compelling vision of human possibility.

Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman (New York: Bantam,1998). Unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can keep growing--it continues to develop with life experiences. Understanding and raising your emotional intelligence is essential to your success and leadership potential. This book is an excellent resource for learning how to accomplish this. It takes the concepts from Daniel Goleman's bestseller, Emotional Intelligence, into the workplace. "Emotional intelligence" is a set of competencies that distinguishes how people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. Analyses done by dozens of experts in 500 corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations worldwide conclude that emotional intelligence is the barometer of excellence on virtually any job. This book describes 12 personal competencies based on self-mastery (such as accurate self-assessment, self-control, initiative, and optimism) and 13 key relationship skills (such as service orientation, developing others, conflict management, and building bonds). Goleman includes many examples and anecdotes--from Fortune 500 companies to a nonprofit preschool--that show how these competencies lead to or thwart success.

When Anger Hurts: Quieting the Storm Within by Matthew McKay, Peter Rogers, and Judith McKay (Oakland: New Harbinger Publications, 1989). An excellent handbook filled with practical exercises that really work. But don't bother with this book if you're looking for a quick fix or a way to justify being angry at all the injustices you've suffered. This book faces head on the widespread misconceptions we have today about anger and being angry.
As with the Tavris book below, the ways we usually deal with anger in today's society are considered unhealthy. While Tavris spends considerable time justifying this view with references to clinical research and practice, the McKays and Rogers simply take it as a given and move on to provide practical effective exercises. You'll need to be diligent about theses practices and give them some time to work, but if you do, the benefits will be enormous.

Her central point is that inappropriately expressed anger is unhealthy and damaging. Tavris explains the physiological purpose and effects of anger and various ways we can come to understand what "sets us off" and how to manage the ways we express anger.
