Aisle 1: Careers
and the Changing
Nature of Work

Your current job may be disappearing. Or you may just be ready for a new challenge. Wherever you stand in the career continuum, the following books can help. Good luck!

Work With Passion: How To Do What You Love For A Living. by Nancy Anderson. (New York: Carroll & Graff, 1984). Originally acclaimed as "the career guide book of the 1980s," this book is still one of the most practical and motivating guides to finding your right livelihood. There are excellent self-assessment tools here, as well as instruction in goal setting, building personal support networks, researching potential jobs, approaching potential employers, using a resume, and overcoming negative emotions. Lots of examples from the experience of Nancy's clients.

Working Together: Entrepreneurial Couples by Frank and Sharan Barnett (Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, 1988). This book is written for every couple ready to put an end to separate lives and separate agendas. The wisdom and insights gained through interviews with entrepreneurial couples across the country provide an in-depth look at shared work and life experiences. This book dispels the myths, addresses social biases, looks at benefits and risks, and outlines the steps to becoming successful co-entrepreneurs.

What Color Is Your Parachute?

What Color Is Your Parachute? A practical manual for job-hunters and career changers by Richard Nelson Bolles (Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, updated annually). This is the definitive life\work planning manual. Parachute is a perennial best-seller because the exercises and advice actually work. Even if you aren't looking for a change in your work, the self-assessment exercises offer you bountiful insight into your inner workings and preferences.

JobShift

JobShift: How to Prosper in a Workplace without Jobs. by William Bridges. (Reading, Massachusetts: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, 1994.) What Inc. magazine calls "the most cogent, up-to-date account available of what's happening to traditional notions of work, jobs, and careers--and why." | Book Review |

Open-Book Management

Open-Book Management. by John Case. (New York: Harper Business, a division of Harper Collins Publishers, 1995). Here's a management strategy in which every employee learns to follow the company's numbers and help make decisions that affect the bottom line. As a senior writer at Inc. magazine, the author is well positioned to propose such a strategy and to introduce companies that are making it work.

Team Talk

Team Talk: The Power of Language in Team Dynamics. by Anne Donnellon. (Boston: Harvard Business School Press, 1996). The role of language in building effective teams. Listening between the lines to improve team performance.

Our Wildest Dreams: Women Entrepreneurs Making Money, Having Fun, Doing Good. by Joline Godfrey. (New York: Harper Business, 1992). Women entrepreneurs making money, having fun, doing good. A whole new definition of success and an entirely new paradigm of working life.

We Are All Self Employed

We Are All Self Employed: The New Social Contract for Working in a Changed World. by Cliff Hakim. (San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler. 1994). An empowering model for steering your own direction and influencing the quality of your own life, whether you work inside or outside an organization.

The Damn Good Resume Guide

The Damn Good Resume Guide. by Yana Parker. (Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, 1994). A "Damn Good Resume" is a self-marketing tool designed with one goal in mind: to get you a job interview. Unlike the old-style chronological resume, the Damn Good Resume is effective because it selects and interprets your past work experience as it relates to your current job objective. This is the best guide around for creating a resume.

Wishcraft

Wishcraft: How To Get What You Really Want. by Barbara Sher with Anne Gottlieb. (New York: Ballantine, 1979). The sub-subtitle says it all: "A unique, step-by-step plan to pinpoint your goals and make your dreams come true." This is the classic career self-help book, second only to Bolle's What Color Is Your Parachute? (see Bolles above).

Audio Tape

Sher, Barbara with Anne Gottlieb Wishcraft: How To Get What You Really Want. Audio cassette edition (June 1988) Renaissance Books; ISBN: 0940687305

Mindfulness & Meaningful Work

Whitmyer, Claude. Mindfulness and Meaningful Work: Explorations in Right Livelihood. (Berkeley: Parallax Press, 1993). Leading thinkers share their insights into the practice and value of finding work that is meaningful, life-affirming, and non-exploitative. In addition to essays ranging from Sam Keen and Marsha Sinetar to Tarthang Tulku and Thich Nhat Hanh, editor Claude Whitmyer has included two chapters of his own. His opening chapter introduces the concept of "right livelihood," traces its roots to Buddhism and the New Age movement, and gives it a new meaning for modern times. His closing chapter outlines a practical step-by-step approach to using mindfulness to find your own meaningful work, whether you are an employee or work for yourself.
